Dec. 21, 2006
The Lady Bisons put together a solid effort, but it wasn't a winning one.
In the second round of the Vanderbilt Holiday Classic at Memorial Gym the Lady Bisons fell 55-53 to Longwood University from Farmville, Va. The Lady Bisons slipped to 3-8. Longwood ended a six-game losing streak, upping its record to 5-9.
"I'm pleased that we competed better and that we played hard," Lipscomb coach Frank Bennett said. "We played hard defensively. We could have played a little smarter."
The Lady Bisons fell behind early in the first half with Longwood eventually opening up an 11-point lead at 19-8 with 8:42 left before intermission. The Lady Bisons slowly started chipping away at the Longwood lead, closing out the half with a 7-2 run to take a 29-27 lead on a lay-up by Penny Jones with 48 seconds left.
In the second half the Lady Bisons stretched their lead to 31-27 with 18:22 left to play on a lay-up by Jilian Partin, making her first start of the season.
Also making her first start was Katie Rollins.
Longwood made a comeback taking the lead at 38-37 on a 3-point shot by Courtney Dyer with 14:12 remaining. The Lady Bisons would stay close, and even tied the game at 42-42 with 8:59 left, and again at 44-44 with 8:27 left, but they never retook the lead. Longwood went on a 9-1 run at that point to lead 53-45 with 6:09 remaining.
"We gave up some easy stuff which put us in a big hole to come back from," Bennett said. "That really hurt us."
The Lady Bisons missed several opportunities to take over the game with off target lay-ups and free throws. They did tie the game one last time at 53-53 as Catie Woods hit a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left.
Longwood's Keiva Small hit a long jumper with two seconds left to give her team the final lead at 55-53.
"In the last 30 seconds Catie Woods did a nice job of hitting the free throws to tie the game," Bennett said. "We played pretty solid defense. Small made a tough shot. We took the timeout and tried to have a chance to finish it. With another second we might have been able to do it."
Woods led the Lady Bisons with 13 points. Partin scored a season-high 10 points.
Jones grabbed 10 rebounds tying Longwood's Odessa Williams for the game high. Jones scored nine points, barely missing a double-double. Julie Martin finished with nine boards and Partin took down eight.
The Lady Bisons were 17-of-55 from the field, 30.9 percent. They were 2-of-17 from 3-point range, 11.8 percent. The Lady Bisons were also 17-of-26 from the free throw line, a 65.4 percent performance.
The Lady Bisons held a 47-31 edge over Longwood in the rebounding category.
Longwood had a trio of scorers hit double figures. Dyer scored a game-high 14 points. Small finished with 12 and Ashleigh Hollman added 11.
The Lady Bisons are taking a holiday break until Dec. 27. They return to action Jan. 2 at Allen Arena in non-conference game with LaSalle.
