The Lady Bisons spotted New Mexico four runs and then played catch-up the rest of the way in a 12-8 loss Friday in the first round of the Buzz Tournament at Georgia Tech.
New Mexico scored one run in the first and added three in the second. The Lady Bisons bounced back with two runs in the third. But New Mexico put six runs across the plate in the bottom of the third for a 10-2 advantage. The Lady Bisons came back with two more runs in the fifth to trim the lead to 10-4. Once again the Lady Bisons responded with four runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 10-8, but New Mexico iced the game with tow more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In the third inning catcher Jennifer Allsup singled to the pitcher with one out. Designated hitter Kristie Sirus and right fielder Leigh Little walked to load the bases. Left fielder Julia Davidson singled to left field to bring home Allsup and Kristie Sirus.
Kristie Sirus was the first runner on base in the fifth with a walk. Abigail Craig entered the game as a pinch-runner for Kristie Sirus. Center fielder Lauren Dortwegt grounded out to move Craig to third. Leigh Little walked. Davidson connected for her second RBI- single to left center to score Craig. Leigh Little moved to third on a wild pitch. Davidson went to second on the same wild pitch. First baseman Heather Collins pounded a single down the left field line to score Leigh Little.
Allsup singled up the middle to start the sixth inning. With one out Dortwegt singled down the left field line. Samantha Little entered the game as a pinch-runner for Allsup. Davidson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kelly Ninemire took the mound for New Mexico and gave up a grand slam to Collins, the first batter she faced.
The Lady Bisons finished the game with eight hits off of three New Mexico pitchers. Caley Peterson started the game and gave up four hits and five runs in four innings. Tori Rogers came on in relief and allowed three hits and two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Ninemire closed out the game, giving up only the grand slam by Collins in 1 1/3 innings.
Kim Jacobson started on the mound for 2 2/3 innings, giving up nine hits and 10 runs, eight earned. She walked four and struck out one.
Christen Campbell closed out the game for the Lady Bisons. She allowed three hits and two runs, both earned, while striking out one and walking one in 3 1/3 innings.
The Lady Bisons were scheduled to play Centenary in the second game Friday.
