Bisons lose 5-4 in nightcap at USC Upstate

Final Stats

The Lipscomb Bisons watched two 4-1 leads turn into a pair of losses Saturday afternoon.

The Bisons lost 9-5 in the opener and then lost 5-4 in the second game of an Atlantic Sun doubleheader at USC Upstate at Harley Park in Spartanburg, S.C.

Both times the Bisons were victims of eighth inning rallies by USC Upstate with eight runs in the first game and three runs in game two.

In the nightcap the Bisons opened with a 4-0 lead with one run in the first and three in the second.

In the first center fielder Allen Bolden singled with one to the right side. Third baseman Caleb Joseph reached by on a fielding error by the third baseman. Left fielder Blake Bratcher hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bolden.

Right fielder Shane Simpkins doubled down the right field line to open the second innings. With one out catcher Jay Moreland singled to right center to score Simpkins. Second baseman Ben Williams followed with a double down the left field line moving Moreland to third. Moreland scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by shortstop Jose Gutierrez. Bolden hit the third double of the inning, this one to left center, to score Williams.

Both shortstop Jorge Gutierrez and Bolden had two hits for the Bisons.

Upstate scored one run each in both the fourth and fifth innings. They took control in the eighth.

Mike Dunn started for the Bisons and pitched 7 2/3 innings. He gave up seven hits and five runs, four earned. He struck out three. He was credited with the loss evening his record at 3-3.

Josh Smith closed out the game pitching a third of an inning. He gave up one hit and struck out one.

Kyle Bowley started on the mound for Upstate. He pitched eight innings, raising his record to 5-2. Justin Hayes relieved and earned his third save.

The Bisons are 21-18 overall, 15-9 in the A-Sun. Upstate is 20-21, 13-11 in the conference.

In game one the Bisons scored two runs in the second and two runs in the seventh for a 4-1 lead over USC Upstate. But Upstate responded with an eight-run eighth inning to rally for the win. The Bisons added one run in the top of the ninth.

Bolden led the Bisons 10-hit attack with three hits and three runs batted in. One of his hits was a triple, his first of the year. He was the only Bisons player with more than one hit in the game.

Gutierrez slammed his 12th double of the season. First baseman Ryan Wilkins added his seventh double.

The Bisons used three pitchers. Brandon McClurg started and pitched seven innings. He was lifted in the eighth after allowing 10 hits and six runs, five earned.

Kyle Tognazzini came on in relief for the second game in a row. Friday night he earned the win over Upstate, but this time around he lasted for one-third of an inning. He faced four batters and gave up four hits and three runs, all earned. Charles Williams closed out the game, holding Upstate hitless while striking out one in two-thirds of an inning.

McClurg took the loss, falling to 5-2 on the season. Phillip Myers won the game in relief for Upstate, evening his record at 1-1.

The Bisons are 21-18 overall, 15-9 in the A-Sun. Upstate is 20-21, 13-11 in the conference.
