Nashville, Tenn. - Jorge Gutierrez, former shortstop for the Lipscomb Bisons, has signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals. He is expected to be assigned to the Burlington Royals, the Rookie-level affiliate for Kansas City. Gutierrez batted .286 as the leadoff batter in all 63 games this past season. He belted 21 extra base hits and stole 18 bases. A native of Miami, Fla., Gutierrez transferred to Lipscomb from the University of Alabama-Birmingham for his senior season. Gutierrez will be joined at Burlington by fellow Atlantic Sun player Carlos Testa, formerly of Belmont. The Burlington Royals are a member of the Appalachian League and are located in Burlington, N.C. The Royals open their season on June 17. |
