The Bisons were looking to bounce back after a disappointing trip to Iowa in which they lost to both Centenary College and Winston-Salem State. However, they could not find their first win of the season on Thursday night in the First Shot Exempt Tournament on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.
The Bisons were defeated by the Mountaineers of Appalachian State 81-58 to fall to 0-3 on the season while Appalachian State improved to 1-1.
Both teams were coming off of loses and looking to improve. The Mountaineers had been beaten by Charlotte on Monday night 84-78.
Appalachian State took an early lead with a jump shot by Jeremy Clayton at the 18:54 mark of the first half. Thomas Pfaff would answer with two points of his own to tie the game at two.
However the Mountaineers stretched the lead out to nine points with another jump shot by Jeremy Clayton. This came with 13:10 left in the first half. Clayton had 14 points and 10 rebounds in the win over the Bisons.
The Mountaineers would continue to lead the Bisons up until the 5:20 mark of the first half. Daniels drained a three to give Lipscomb a 22-21 advantage over Appalachian State. It would wind up being the Bisons only lead of the game.
Appalachian State went on what proved to be a game changing 9-0 run to stretch their lead out to eight with 2:50 left to play in the first half.
At half time the Bisons trailed the Mountaineers 36-27
Simms had 13 points and Donte Minter had 8 points going into the locker room for half time for Appalachian State.
Pfaff led the Bisons with eight points at the end of the first half.
The second half belonged to the Mountaineers who went on an 8-3 run to start the half.
"We have got to be better defensively," said coach Scott Sanderson. "We were not good defensively at all in the second half."
Appalachian State took advantage of the Bisons poor second half defense by increasing their lead to 19 on a layup by Donald Simms with 12:10 to play in the half.
The Mountaineers would not look back as they rolled to an 81-58 victory over the Bisons.
Simms led all scorers with 20 points. Eduardo Bermudez backed him up with 16 points of his own.
Pfaff was one rebound shy of a double-double. He had 14 points and nine rebounds. Eddie Ard shot a dismal 2-15 from the field and ended up with only seven points. Freshman Adnan Hodzic had his best night of the season with 10 points and three rebounds.
Appalachian State shot 49 percent from the field. Lipscomb turned the ball over eighteen times and shot 34 percent from the field.
After the game Coach Sanderson said, "We can't focus on winning and losing right now. We have to focus on getting better."
The Bisons fall to 0-3 on the year. Appalachian State is 1-1
The Bisons next action is on Friday night in the second round of the First Shot Exempt Tournament when they take on the MTSU Blue Raiders. There will be no radio coverage on the Lipscomb Radio Network. On Saturday night the Bisons will finish the tournament by playin San Jose State. This game can be heard on the Lipscomb Radio Network directly following Memphis football.
