After trailing by seven points on the road at half time, Lipscomb battled back in the second half to take a 79-72 lead over the Mercer Bears. However, the young Bisons team could not hold off the Bears in the closing minutes of the game, and Mercer went on to win 84-82.
The Bisons will now fall to 8-12 on the year and 2-4 in the Atlantic Sun. Mercer improves to 9-10 overall and 4-2 in the A-Sun.
The Bisons had won seven straight games against the Bears up until this game. Last season Lipscomb defeated Mercer three times, including a win in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. Lipscomb has been the team to knock Mercer out of the A-Sun Tournament in both of the last two seasons.
The lead went back and fourth for both teams in the first half. Mercer jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Bisons fought back to make it 9-8 at the 12:20 mark. The two teams continued to stay close until Mercer went on a 20-9 first half run to bring their lead out to 12. However, the Bisons put together 5 unanswered points to close the half and cut the lead to 7. Going into intermission, the Bisons trailed the Bears 45-38.
Lipscomb came out of the locker room looking to add to their 5-0 run that closed the half. The Bisons scored 4 quick points to cut the lead to 3. Mercer held a 57-53 lead over Lipscomb when things began to turn the Bisons way. Lipscomb went on a 16-5 run and found themselves leading 69-62.
Another break came for the Bisons at the 7:34 mark in the second half. Mercer's sophomore James Florence committed his 5th foul and had to watch the remaining minutes from the bench.
The Bisons did not give up their lead until under the 2:00 mark. Mercer took an 82-80 lead, but Lipscomb would not go down easily. Freshman Josh Slater drained a mid-range jump shot with 38.4 seconds remaining to tie the game at 82. However, the Bisons efforts were not enough. Mercer regained the lead on the next possession to make it 84-82. The Bisons could not make anything of their last possession and found themselves on the losing end of another close game.
Senior Eddie Ard led the way for the Bisons in scoring with 21 points. His fellow Senior Jason Hopkins pulled down a team leading 8 rebounds. Freshman Jimmy Oden delivered a career high 9 assists to lead the Bisons.
The Bisons fall to 8-12 on the year and 2-4 in the A-Sun. Mercer improves to 9-10 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic Sun.
