The women's spring golf season is underway for this year, but already plans are being made for next season.
One of the main reasons there is optimism about the 2008-2009 season is the signing of Mary Leigh Baker from Franklin, Tenn. Mary Leigh attends Battle Ground Academy.
Mary Leigh, 5-foot-5, has won a number of honors in golf. She was an All-State selection in 2004, 2005 and 2007. She was All-Region in 2004 and 2006. She also served as team captain in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Her top golf memory was making a 30-foot uphill putt on the 18th hole on the last day of the State Tournament her senior year. She shot a 74 and finished third.
The BGA team was runner-up State Champion in 2004 and 2007. They were Region Champions in 2004 and Region runner-up in 2005.
Mary Leigh was also a cheerleader in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
She has also starred in the classroom serving as a member of Science National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (Math) and the National Honor Society.
Mary Leigh plans to major in nursing. One of her goals is to participate in medical mission trips in Spanish-speaking countries.
Mary Leigh will be the third generation of her family to attend Lipscomb. One of her grandfathers played tennis for Lipscomb.
"Lipscomb has so many things that I was looking for in a college," Mary Leigh said. "There is a Christian environment, a good nursing program and fun activities."
She is the daughter of Leigh Anne and Ben Baker. She has one brother, Martin, 15.
