The Lady Bisons soccer team is still looking for its first Atlantic Sun victory, but they now have the second conference tie in the history of the program.
Saturday night the Lady Bisons and the Fighting Camels of Campbell played to a 0-0 tie. The only other A-Sun tie for the Lady Bisons was Oct. 24, 2003 when they played Mercer to a 0-0 tie. This was the first A-Sun tie game for the Lady Bisons on the road.
"This was really exciting," said Lady Bisons coach Jon Ireland. "They beat us 4-0 last year. I'm sure they had us penciled in as a win. It is really cool to come on the road and play a game like this through two overtimes."
Lady Bisons goaltender Katie Shelton stopped 13 shots on goal, a season high. Her previous high had been 10 set three times this season against Murray State, Arkansas-Little Rock and Presbyterian.
Campbell made 28 shots overall.
"Katie played a great game," Ireland said. "It's incredible that she only gave up one goal in two road games. She is the best goalkeeper in the conference."
Shelton stopped a penalty kick in the second overtime in the 103rd-minute and also blocked a rebound of the save to preserve the shutout.
"We have been talking about the defense stepping up," Ireland said. "We have been working hard on defense the last two or three weeks.
"If you look at the games early in the season we were giving up a lot of goals. Our last few games we have lost to Austin Peay 1-0 and Gardner-Webb 1-0. Our extra work on defense and our fitness were keys against Campbell."
The Lady Bisons opened conference play Thursday night with a 1-0 loss at Gardner-Webb.
"Sometimes when you work hard and play hard you don't always get the results that you want," Ireland said. "This time we did against Campbell."
The Lady Bisons are 1-0-1 in overtime games this season. They beat Jackson State 1-0. at home Sept. 11 in the first overtime period.
The Lady Bisons are 2-7-1 overall, 0-1-1 in the A-Sun.Campbell is 1-5-1 overall, 0-1-1 in the A-Sun.
