Sunday, September 07, 2008All the Lipscomb Bisons needed was to hold on for another 57 seconds to tie the United States Naval Academy.
But Sunday morning at UMBC Stadium in Baltimore, Md., the Bisons allowed the winning goal at the 109:03 for a 3-2 Navy win in the second round of the Adidas Kick-Off Classic. The tournament was hosted by the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
Lipscomb junior defender Kezi Lara was named to the All-Tournament team.
It was the first overtime game for the Bisons this season.
Freshman forward Garret Pettis put the Bisons on the board first blasting a 24-yard shot over the Navy goalkeeper at the 6:06 mark.
Navy tied the game at 53:52 when Mark Garcia scored an unassisted goal.
In the second half Navy scored at 77:05 to take a 2-1 lead on a shot by Adam Pennington that went inside the right post from 19 yards out.
The Bisons wasted little time responding. Freshman midfielder Andre Santos, with an assist from back T.J. Williams, scored on a header from 12 yards out that went over the goalkeeper as he rushed forward to make the play.
Neither team scored in the first overtime.
In the second overtime the game looked like it was going to end in a stalemate when Mike Porcelli scored from nine yards out for Navy to seal the win.
Freshman Brent McGee made his first start in goal for the Bisons. He made four saves. Navy attempted 17 shots including seven shots on goal.
The Bisons made 14 shot attempts, with 10 shots on goal. Navy goalkeeper Tyler Bristol was credited with eight saves.
Pettis and freshman back Josh Lind each attempted three shots to lead the Bisons. All three of Lind's shots were shots on goal.
The Bisons are 1-3-0. Navy is 2-1-1.
