NASHVILLE, TENN. – The Lipscomb University Bisons used exceptional ball movement in a 90-78 victory over the Kennesaw State Owls Monday evening in Allen Arena.
“That is unbelievable to have 30 baskets on 27 assists,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson. “I thought we moved the basket really well.”
Five Bisons scored in double figures led by Adnan Hodzic with 20 points. Josh Slater had 16 points while Michael Teller, Brandon Brown, and Lusk had 12 points each.
Lipscomb had struggled with turning the ball over in January averaging 19.9 turnovers per game. But the Bisons committed only ten turnovers against Kennesaw State.
“We’ve shot the ball better, we’ve rebounded the ball better, we’ve been better defensively,” said Sanderson. “Our biggest Achilles’ heel has been turning the ball over and we did a better job with that tonight.”
Lipscomb took an early 17-6 lead at the 13:36 mark in the first half. The Bisons expanded their lead to 14 (30-16) on a layup by Brian Wright with 7:55 left in the first. Lipscomb held a 45-33 lead at the half.
The Bisons used an 8-0 run to go up 66-45 with 12:15 left in the game. The 21 point advantage was the largest of the game for the Bisons.
Kennesaw State used a 13-2 run over 2:04 to bring the game back to nine points (79-70) with 4:27 left.
“I don’t like them going on this run, but I thought we were pretty solid across the game,” Sanderson said.
Lipscomb went on an 11-5 run off of 3-pointers by Lusk and Teller along with five free throws to regain a 15 point lead (90-75) with 1:30 remaining.
Lipscomb shot 30-of-51 (58.8 percent) on the afternoon. Kennesaw State was 29-of-60 (48.3 percent) from the field.
The Bisons scored 40 points in the paint.
Lipscomb was 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) from the 3-point line. Kennesaw State was 10-of-19 (52.6 percent). Lipscomb’s ten 3-pointers were the most since the Bisons hit 11 in their season-opener against Oakland City.
The Bisons shot 20-of-31 (64.5 percent) from the free throw line. Kennesaw State was 10-of-10 (100 percent).
Lipscomb outrebounded Kennesaw State 31-23. Teller, Brown, Hodzic, and Thomas Pfaff had five each to lead the Bisons.
Lipscomb improves to 8-11, 4-6 in the A-Sun. Kennesaw State is 6-12, 2-7 in the A-Sun.
The Bisons are back in action Saturday afternoon at Stetson in DeLand, Fla. Game time is 6 p.m.
“I told my team that ‘the team that we play next is the team that put us into the tailspin about two weeks ago,’” Sanderson said. “We need to get ready and have a good week at practice.”
