It was a September Philip Hutcheson won't soon forget.
Early in the month, the former Lipscomb basketball star returned to his alma mater as athletics director in an effort to bridge the school's rich athletics past with the present.
Then, before he settled into his new office, Hutcheson got the call local athletes dream of. He was told he was being inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.
"First I got the job at Lipscomb and, of course, I was very happy about that,'' Hutcheson said. "And then I got a call telling me I was being inducted into the hall of fame. It all happened right in the same week or so."
Fellow inductees in are: Sam Bartholomew, Jr. (Lifetime Achievement Award); Joe Gilliam Jr. (ex-TSU quarterback); Ronald “Woody” Hunt (Cumberland University baseball coach); Stan Huntsman (former Tennessee track coach); Sarah Ingram (former Duke All-American golfer); Chip Kell (two-time football All-American at UT); Andy Nelson (former Memphis star, member of the 1958 NFL champion Baltimore Colts); Tommy Owen (longtime football coach at MBA); Elliot Perry (former Memphis basketball star) and Tim Priest (UT’s career interceptions leader).
