Monday, August 17, 2009Lipscomb Bisons soccer coach Charles Morrow is looking for one thing from his players in the first days of preseason practice - consistency.
“We will come out and have a great session and they will do some things where you say, `man, we are so far ahead of where we were last year’.
“Then we will come out the next session and it will be shocking how inconsistent sometimes the training can be. A big thing we are working on is trying to be consistent from session to session which is difficult because of the heat the number of times we train during the day.”
The Bisons practiced twice Saturday, three Sunday and three Monday. Morrow is like most coaches at this point in the preseason. He doesn’t think his team is where it needs to be.
“The preseason is so short for us,” said Morrow. “We basically get one week to practice before school starts.
“It is about becoming comfortable with each other and about the guys stepping up and taking on their responsibilities.”
Classes for the fall semester begin Aug. 24. The Bisons will play Louisville Saturday at 11 a.m. in an exhibition game at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
“For the most part the guys came in fit and ready to go,” said Morrow. “We still have some lingering injuries from the spring and summer that we are dealing with.”
A couple of freshmen are nursing injuries. The Bisons return all but one starter from last season, but Morrow is impressed with the newcomers, especially midfielder Deven Bahadoorsingh, defender/midfielder Ryan Christopher and defender Ben Maxham.
“Deven has done well,” said Morrow. “Ryan has shown he can be dynamic going forward at times. Ben has played solid in the back. “There are several freshmen who have done alright so far. But they are coming into a situation where everyone is doing well.”
