Friday, September 18, 2009The Lipscomb Lady Bisons and Florida Gulf Coast both have perfect records in the Atlantic Sun Conference this season.
Saturday night one of the two will no longer be able to say that. The A-Sun has billed the confrontation as the A-Sun Match of the Week.
The Lady Bisons swept Stetson 3-0 Friday night in DeLand, Fla., to extend their A-Sun record to 4-0, with all matches being decided by 3-0 scores. Florida Gulf Coast, 6-5, beat Belmont 3-2 in Fort Myers, Fla. Florida Gulf Coast is 5-0 in the conference.
“Our players know what is going on with this match,” said. Lady Bisons coach Brandon Rosenthal. “We really don’t need to say anything to them.”
The Lady Bisons twice won four straight matches last season.
They lost twice to Florida Gulf Coast last season by scores of 3-1 and 3-2. Florida Gulf Coast was the only team to sweep the Lady Bisons last season. The Lady Bisons finished one game behind Florida Gulf Coast for the regular season title.
The Lady Bisons were 17-3 in the A-Sun. Florida Gulf Coast won the conference title with an 18-2 record.
“We have a job to do,” said Rosenthal. “Our players realize that Florida Gulf Coast is going to be there at the end, hopefully, like we will be. It is important to go out there and play them tough.
“The past two seasons they won the regular season championship, but weren’t eligible for the tournament. I imagine they are thinking they want to win both. And our players have talked candidly about winning the regular season.”
The Lady Bisons, 7-3 overall, beat Stetson 25-14, 25-15 and 25-15. Stetson is winless on the season at 0-10, 0-4 in the A-Sun. They have been shut out a program record seven straight matches.
“Our players have been working hard,” said Rosenthal. “I thought they did a nice job coming out and getting out to an early lead. They didn’t let Stetson get back into the game.
“Our players are pretty focused on this trip. “We said we had to play our game. We didn’t want to get caught up with what they were doing. They are excited about getting another road win.”
Junior midfielder Alex Kelly made a match-high 16 kills. She posted a double-double with 11 digs.
Sophomore Meghan Hinemeyer made a match-high 13 kills and posted a .522 hitting percentage. Sophomore libero Katie Rose added 12 digs.
The Lady Bisons also made eight service aces with senior opposite Erin Pierce and freshman outside hitter Kaycee Green each making three.
“I thought we did a nice job serving,” said Rosenthal. “We put a lot of pressure on them serving. We are a tough serving team, but we don’t usually get a lot of aces.
“I thought overall we did a great job in our transition defense. Even if Stetson was able to get a good attack on us we did an excellent job of setting it back up for our attack.”
