Friday, September 18, 2009The Bisons lost 2-1 Friday night to North Carolina-Asheville in the opening round of the Hyatt Place Select Tournament at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
They will face Alabama A&M , 1-6, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in the second round.
Conner Holzinger scored at 18:04 of the first half for Asheville on a penalty kick.
“We started slow,” said Lipscomb coach Charles Morrow. “We didn’t start playing with a sense of purpose until we went down a goal.”
That may be the most frustrating part of the season so far for Morrow.
“This is the same problem we had against Michigan State and Michigan,” said Morrow. “It’s frustrating. Until we get it fixed we can’t expect to be successful.”
In the second half Asheville moved ahead 2-0 on a goal by Bryan Bartels at the 64:02 mark.
The Bisons prevented the shutout when Garret Pettis scored at 72:26. He was assisted by Garrett McLaughlin.
Also frustrating for Morrow was that the Bisons out shot Asheville 36-10 overall and 16-6 in shots on goal, but could only produce one goal.
Lassi Hurskainen made 15 saves for Asheville.
Brent McGee started in goal for Lipscomb and gave up one goal and made three saves in the first half. Patrick Walsh played the second half. He gave up one goal and made one save.
“We played well enough to win it,” said Morrow. “We were unlucky in not being able to tie the game or get the go-ahead goal. “We have to have more desire. We can’ wait until we are down a goal to see it.”
The Bisons are 2-3-1. Asheville is 2-4-1.
In the first game of the tournament Belmont beat Alabama A & M 4-3 in overtime. It was the first win of the season for Belmont, 1-3-1.
Sunday at noon Belmont will face North Carolina-Asheville.
