Friday, November 06, 2009The Bisons soccer team has earned a second chance and they don’t plan to squander it.
The Bisons, ,3-4-2, 6-9-3 overall, qualified for the No. 6 seed in Atlantic Sun Tournament last Sunday, defeating USC Upstate 2-1 on the last day of the season. The win earned the Bisons a chance to play No. 3-seed ETSU, 4-4-1, 5-8-5. The Bisons lost to ETSU last Friday night 3-0 in Johnson City.
The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Saturday.
“It’s going to be a tight game,” said Lipscomb coach Charles Morrow. “We are looking forward to having another shot at them. We, hopefully, can play better than we did last weekend, get the result we want and move on.”
Saturday afternoon at 1 the two teams will meet in Johnson City with the winner advancing to the semifinals against Stetson at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C.
Morrow stressed that he addressed the problems in the ETSU game with his players immediately after the game.
“If we had not addressed the problems we wouldn’t have beaten Upstate on Sunday,” said Morrow. “We talked about it a lot. “Our guys are not intimidated. We haven’t gotten the results in conference games that we would like. Both teams have played hard-of-conference schedules. We are ready for the challenge.”
The Bisons are led by forward Miguel DaSilva, a member of the Atlantic Sun All-Conference team for the second year in a row, and defenseman Kezi Lara, a second team all-conference selection.
“I like this group of guys,” said Morrow. “I like the way we have responded to challenges in the past.
“I am encouraged by the way we have responded to adversity and the way we have dealt with second chances.”
This is the Bisons third straight trip to the A-Sun Tournament.
“There is a sense of urgency,” said Morrow. “The fact that only two of players made the All-Conference team should be a motivation to other players on the team such as Garret Pettis to perform.
“To be honest with you I don’t think it bothers him that he is not on the team. I think it does bother him that he has not played as well as he would like. And there are other guys on the team like Garrett McLaughlin who played well and could have been there on the list as well.”
