The Lipscomb Lady Bisons (3-10, 1-2 A-Sun) look to stay on the winning track against Florida Gulf Coast (8-3, 3-0 A-Sun) Monday evening. Game time is 5:15 p.m. in Allen Arena.
The Lady Bisons earned their first Atlantic Sun win Saturday afternoon against Stetson 79-60. Freshman Chelsea McMeans came off the bench to post team-highs with 17 points and seven rebounds. Jenna Bartsokas (12) and Chelsea Burroughs (10) also scored in double figures. Bartsokas added a team-high six assists and two steals.
Florida Gulf Coast soundly defeated Belmont 81-48 Saturday afternoon. Chelsea Lyles had 22 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three blocks to pace FGCU. Adrianne tallied 17 points and had a team-high seven rebounds. Brittany Brown added 12 points off the bench. FGCU shot 54 percent, hit 11 three-pointers, and was 16-of-20 from the free throw line.
Florida Gulf Coast has won all three matchups between the two squads. Last year FGCU won 81-51 in Allen Arena on Jan. 3 and 89-46 in Fort Myers on Jan. 29.
Last Time Out
Lipscomb coach Frank Bennett has been waiting all season for his Lady Bisons to break out offensively. Saturday afternoon in Allen Arena they finally did beating Atlantic Sun Conference foe Stetson 79-60.
The 79 points are the most scored in a game this season by the Lady Bisons, marking the first time this season they have scored 70 or more points. They also set a team season high in assists with 22. Bennett said in his 30 years as Lipscomb coach he could not recall them making only six turnovers in a game.
The Lady Bisons shot 42.2 percent from the field (27-64), 26.2 percent from 3-point range (26.3 percent) and 20-31 from the free throw line (64.9 percent).
One of the strongest performances of the game was by freshman center Chelsea McMeans with a season and career high 17 points, 13 in the second half. The 17 points were also a game high. She also led the Lady Bisons in rebounding with seven.
The Lady Bisons led 32-26 at intermission. Stetson cut the lead to 25-24 with 4:28 on the clock. They also trimmed the Lady Bisons lead to one at 27-26 with 2:46 before the half.
In the second half the Lady Bisons came out strong with a 10-3 run to take a 42-29 lead.
With 8:39 left sophomore forward Chelsea Burroughs scored to give the Lady Bisons an 18-point lead at 61-43. She also scored to give the Lady Bisons a 63-43 lead.
Bartsokas Named A-Sun POTW
Junior guard Jenna Bartsokas was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week on Dec. 14. She tallied a season-high 20 points in Lipscomb's 74-69 loss to Evansville on Dec. 8. It notched the third time in the Franklin, Tenn. native’s career that she scored 20 or more points. The exercise science major shot 7-of-14 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Bartsokas also grabbed three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
