FORT MYERS, FLA. – Josh Slater flirted with a triple-double Thursday evening finishing with 19 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in Lipscomb’s 93-75 win against Florida Gulf Coast in Alico Arena.
With Slater controlling the floor, junior center Adnan Hodzic dominating the paint, and sophomores Jordan Burgason and Brian Wright draining threes, the Bisons were virtually unstoppable shooting 56.7 percent from the floor, hitting 12 threes, and going 13-of-15 from the line.
And after a lackadaisical defense performance last week against USC Upstate, the Bisons delivered the defensive stops holding the Eagles to 42.6 percent shooting. It was the seventh time this season Lipscomb has held its opponent to under 43 percent from the floor with the Bisons winning all seven.
Lipscomb jumped out to an 11-0 lead and FGCU didn’t connect on its first field goal until the 15:27 mark.
The Bisons lead quickly disappeared as the Eagles made five consecutive field goals to tie the game at 20 with 8:54 to go in the half.
Two treys each by Burgason and Wright sandwiched around a three by Slater propelled the Bisons to an 11 point lead, 41-30, with 1:57 remaining before half. Slater added a free throw to give Lipscomb the 42-30 lead at the break.
After a layup by junior forward Brandon Brown, Hodzic scored six straight as the Bisons expanded its lead to 18 points.
Following a trey by FGCU’s Reed Baker, Lipscomb embarked on a 19-6 run to blow the game open taking a 79-51 lead with 8:48 left.
The Eagles started to make things interesting going on a 10-2 run to bring the spread down to 20 points while hitting 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions.
But FGCU had run out of steam as they didn’t connect on a field goal from the 4:30 mark until Anthony Bank’s fastbreak dunk with 15 seconds left.
Hodzic led Lipscomb with 24 points. Burgason matched Slater with 19 points while Brian Wright added 12 on four threes. Burgason and Wright combined to go 9-of-16 from downtown.
Hodzic was 10-of-14 from the field and four-of-four from the line. The Bisons were 34-of-60 from the floor and 12-of-26 from beyond the arc.
FGCU was 26-of-61 from the floor and 9-of-27 from the 3-point line for 33.3 percent.
Baker paced the Eagles with 18 points while Sherwood Brown tallied 15 off the bench.
Slater’s 11 assists tied a season-high. Lipscomb’s 25 assists were the Bisons’ second highest tally of the season.
Lipscomb tied a season-low with nine turnovers. FGCU also controlled the ball well giving it up 11 times, but the Bisons capitalized on almost every opportunity for 18 points.
Lipscomb led the battle for the boards 34-28. Slater’s nine boards led Lipscomb while Banks and Brown each grabbed six for the Eagles.
Lipscomb plays its final road game of the season Saturday when they face off with Stetson at 6 p.m. You can hear all the action on the Lipscomb Sports Network at www.LipscombSports.com/SportsNetwork/.
