Saturday, February 27, 2010After two weeks off without any matches, the Lipscomb Bisons scheduled an impromptu match against Martin Methodist University Saturday. The match was the first to be played on Lipscomb’s new home courts.
The Bisons won the doubles point to start off the match, a 4-3 win.
Daniel Hangstefer and Mario Hernandez lost to Melvin Prada and Vircious Santos at No. 1, 6-8.
With a loss at No. 1, Lipscomb’s other doubles teams picked up the slack.
Chad Pierron and James Murrell won their match at No. 2, defeating Renato Castro and Fabio Santos 8-6.
At No. 3, Colby Shaw and Tanner Brown pulled out a win over Matthew Dyer and Alvano Morcillo 8-5, awarding Lipscomb the doubles point.
The Bisons headed into singles play with a 1-0 edge.
Hangstefer lost his match against No. 1 Prada, rallying back in the second set in a tiebreaker for a 1-6, 6-7 (8) defeat.
At No. 2, Pierron fought a tough battle against V. Santos, unfortunately losing in a close-matched three setter 6-7, 7-6, 6-7.
Brown, a freshman, picked up a win at No. 3, easily beating Castro 6-2, 6-2.
With the match score tied 2-2, the Bisons’ bottom half of the line up needed to step up their game to give Lipscomb the advantage.
Murrell, at No. 4, fell to F. Santos 6-3, 7-6 (7), giving Martin Methodist a 3-2 lead.
At No. 5, Hernandez grabbed the Bisons a win to even the match score at 3-3. Hernandez defeated Morcillo 6-4, 6-4.
Granting Lipscomb the win, Shaw won his match at No. 6, handily defeating Dyer 6-0, 6-1.
"It was certainly nice today to be back at home for the first time in a year," Bisons coach Andrew Harris said. "Martin Methodist played a very hard match obviously based on the scores, and we were able to come together when needed. Our doubles continues to get better, and hopefully by next weekend, we will be able to take to an even higher level.
“Singles continues to be a work in progress as we need to close out matches and come out stronger in the first set of matches. Martin Methodist was very accommodating this week to come to Nashville on such short notice. But the guys needed more repetition and this was a good day for them."
The Bisons return to the courts Friday, March 5 in their first Conference match of the season against Campbell. The match will be played at home on Lipscomb’s new courts.
