Thursday, August 12, 2010Former Lipscomb pitcher Josh Smith has been promoted to the Dayton Dragons of the Class A Midwest League by the Cincinnati Reds.
Smith opened the season with the Billings Mustangs in the rookie Pioneer League. In 12 appearances, all in relief, the right-hander was 1-2 with a 2.14 earned run average. In 21 innings he gave up 16 hits and five runs, all earned. He struck out 28 and walked 10.
Smith was drafted in the 21st round by the Cincinnati Reds in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.
Smith, a fifth-year senior from Margate, Fla., was named to the A-Sun All-Conference First Team as a starting pitcher. He went 8-4 with a 4.66 earned run average. Smith tossed four complete games including a string of three straight.
He ranked fourth nationally in the regular season for strikeouts with 124. He struck out more than 100 batters in each of the last two seasons. Smith set the Lipscomb NCAA-era record for strikeouts in a game with 15 against ETSU on Mar. 26. He tied the record a week later against Illinois State.
