Friday, October 22, 2010The Lipscomb Lady Bisons are closing out the Atlantic Sun regular season with thoughts of what might have been.
“It has been a lot of frustration,†Lady Bisons coach Jon Ireland said. “We’ve had a very good team this year and that has been the frustrating part because we didn’t have more success.â€Â
This season’s edition of the Lady Bisons has been the most talented in the history of the program. But often the team has played with only two subs.
“A lot of coaches that have played against us have told us this is the best team we have had here,†Ireland said. “Unfortunately, what they say about us doesn’t equal out to wins.
“We had a lot of injuries to begin the season. We have got some players back, but the fitness level of the injured players is not what it needs to be so we are still limited.â€Â
The Lady Bisons are 0-8 all-time against Belmont in the "Battle of the Boulevard". The Lady Bisons are 4-13-0, 0-9 in the conference. Belmont is 4-11-0, 3-6-0 in the A-Sun.
Game time at the Whitten Soccer Complex is 1 p.m. Saturday. Both teams have struggled offensively. Belmont is ninth overall in the conference with 17 goals. The Lady Bisons are 10th with 10.
“Belmont has struggled to find goals this season,†Ireland said. “They have just been unlucky.
“You can always throw the records out in this game. The last two years the games have been very competitive.â€Â
Tatjana Shirley and Andie Thornton are the top scorers for the Lady Bisons. Each one has scored two goals.
“We have not been able to score this year,†Ireland said. “There have been games where we have created a lot of chances and been the better team. But the bottom line is if you can’t score you aren’t going to be able to win games. It has been our downfall.â€Â
On the positive side of things Ireland thinks the competition gap between the Lady Bisons and the rest of the A-Sun is closing.
“In the past we would get outshot 30-5 and we would never be in a game at all,’ Ireland said. “This year that has not been the case. We have played very well against teams like Florida Gulf Coast and Jacksonville cutting down the shooting gap to the 12-7 range."
“We only have two seniors on the team. We have most of the team coming back. We know the pieces we need in terms of offensive help next season.â€Â
