Wednesday, February 09, 2011In the brief history of the Pope Center/Gore Arena at Campbell University the Lipscomb Bisons have posted a 2-0 record.
Thursday night the Bisons will try to get back on the winning track when the two teams meet at 6 p.m. in Buies Creek, N.C. The Bisons have lost their last two games and are 1-3 in their last four road games.
The Bisons are 14-10 overall, 9-6 in the Atlantic Sun. Campbell is 1-4 in its last five games. Campbell is 11-13 overall, 5-9 in the conference.
One of the primary objectives for the Bisons is to play a 40-minute game.
“We want to be more consistent on both ends of the floor for longer periods of time,” Bisons’ coach Scott Sanderson said. “We’ve had spells when we have played very, very well and we have had spells where we haven’t played particularly well.
“That has been the emphasis the last couple of days. We want to have more quality possessions. When you have a 40-minute game there are 55 to 60 possessions. We have to have more quality possessions defensively than offensively. When you are having a hard time stopping people it puts a lot of pressure on your offense.”
Sanderson and his staff have reminded the players on a daily basis what is important to winning games. No words have been wasted in letting the players know what is needed.
“We have been pretty matter of fact about it,” Sanderson said. “There hasn’t been a whole lot of dialogue going on.
“The emphasis is still the same. We just want to get better in field goal defense, not turning the ball over and rebounding the ball.”
Lipscomb center Adnan Hodzic is averaging 18.3 points per game which leads the A-Sun. Guard Josh Slater is averaging 16.4 points per game, fourth best in the conference.
Hodzic and Slater do more than score for the Bisons. Hodzic leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game, second best in the conference overall. Slater is first in steals with 2.9 per game.
The Bisons have won six of eight games at Campbell in the history of the series. The Bisons won 92-81 on Jan. 17 at Allen Arena behind a 33-point performance from Hodzic.
Campbell is led by 6-foot-8 forward Eric Griffin with 12.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Guard Lorne Merthie is scoring 11.2 points per game.
“Campbell is very long, very quick and very athletic,” Sanderson said. “They rebound the ball very well. They do some things that have given our team some problems this year.
“This year’s team does not have a guy who can erase a lot of mistakes defensively. We have to play together defensively. If one guy breaks down our entire team breaks down.”
The Bisons have three more road games left including the final two games of the regular season.
“If you don’t play well on the road, and if you only play 20 or 25 minutes, then chances are you are going to get beat,” Sanderson said. “That is what happened to us last weekend at North Florida and Jacksonville.”
The Bisons do not play again until Feb. 17 when USC Upstate visits Allen Arena.
