Friday, February 18, 2011Usually when a team is faced with a more athletic opponent in a basketball game the plan is to slow the game down.
But Saturday night at 4 the Lipscomb Lady Bisons are going to welcome ETSU to Allen Arena with an aggressive defensive attack and a driving offense.
‘We are trying to push the tempo to try to get some easy baskets here and there,” Lipscomb coach Frank Bennett said. “We want to try to find opportunities to get the defense back on its heels instead of walking up court and setting it up.
“Against an athletic team you might think that would not be the thing to do because it creates more rebounds. But if we can open the court up a little bit it helps us offensively. We are trying to do several things that could give us more opportunities.”
ETSU’s Lady Bucs are 16-10 overall, 13-4 in the Atlantic Sun. ETSU can clinch the top spot in the A-Sun Tournament with wins in its next two games. One more win will do it if Stetson loses another game.
The Lady Bisons have lost 10 of their last 11 games. They are 8-17 overall, 5-11 in the conference, including a 95-64 loss to ETSU in Johnson City Jan. 22 at the MSHA Athletic Center.
“They have traditionally always had really good athletes,” Bennett said. “They would be the No. 1 seed in the tournament if the season ended today. But I think we have a good shot against them here.
“In our last game against them we didn’t play very good defense. We weren’t really very sharp. But we think we have improved. The final result is not showing up like we want, but we are making progress.”
The Lady Bisons are led by guards Jenna Bartsokas (15 points per game) and Anna Bowers (13.5 points per game). Bartsokas is fourth in the A-Sun and Bowers is 10th.
Tara Davis is the top scorer for ETSU with 15.1 points per game followed by Destiny Mitchell with 14.5 and Natalie Pickwell with 11.5.
Mitchell is the rebounding leader with nine per game. Pickwell has a 39.7 percent success rate from 3-point range, averaging 2.4 per game.
ETSU has a nine-game winning streak against the Lady Bisons. The Lady Bucs are 12-1 overall against the Lady Bisons.
The Lady Bisons close out the home portion of the regular season Monday when USC Upstate visits for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The Lady Bisons will be wearing their pink uniforms as part of “Think Pink”/”Pack the House’ night for cancer awareness.
