Wednesday, February 23, 2011After a year’s absence the Lipscomb Lady Bisons have qualified for the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
The only thing left to determine is what seed they will receive. They are in a tie with Kennesaw State and Belmont. The results of the final two games of the season will decide those seeds.
The Lady Bisons beat Kennesaw State 68-58 at Allen Arena Dec. 18.
“I think we have really improved,” Lady Bisons coach Frank Bennett said. “It hasn’t shown in the bottom line yet on the scoreboard.”
“But I watch the tapes and I see our defensive rotation and the helps are there most of the time. I see our offense getting really good shots. I think they are going to start falling for us. I don’t think anyone in the tournament wants to play us.”
Kennesaw State is 8-18 overall, 5-13 in the A-Sun. The Lady Bisons are 8-19, 5-13 in the conference. The two teams will face each other at 4 p.m. Thursday at the KSU Convocation Center. Belmont is also 5-13 in the conference.
Senior Lady Bisons guard Miaca Bowman thinks the Lady Bisons have ramped the intensity level up in practices the past couple of weeks and especially in the last couple of practices.
“If you look at all the games we have played in the conference there are 34-to-36 minutes where we have the game and then we break down for two-or-three minutes,” Bowman said. “We are working to cut those two or three minutes out.”
Kennesaw State is led by Angie Smith with 14 points per game. Sametria Gideon has a double-double average with 12.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
“Kennesaw is a really good rebounding team,” Bennett said. “They are always a rebounding challenge.
“They have some guards that can score. In a couple of games their guards have scored 50 points between them. They will also press us some.”
Guard Jenna Bartsokas leads the Lady Bisons in scoring with 15 points per game, fifth highest overall in the A-Sun. Guard Anna Bowers averages 12.9 points.
Bowers is 27th in NCAA Division I in 3-point field goals made per game with 2.8.
Center Brittany Duerk is the rebound leader for the Lady Bisons with 5.5.
The Lady Bisons will close out the regular season with a visit to Mercer Saturday. Mercer did not qualify for the A-Sun Tournament.
