Saturday, February 26, 2011The Lipscomb Lady Bisons lost 3-1 to Indiana State in the second game Saturday at the “Magic City Classic” at UAB in Birmingham.
Earlier in the day the Lady Bisons beat Radford 3-1.
J.J. Nelson started against Indiana State for the Lady Bisons. She gave up a home run to Kim Pierce in the first inning. In the second Indiana State scored a run when Stephanie Jonson was hit by a pitch and then stole second. She moved to third on a ground out and then scored on a passed ball.
Indiana State added a third run in the third inning. With the bases loaded due to a single and two walks Danielle Ketner scored when Alyssa Marcum walked with the bases loaded.
The Lady Bisons scored a run in the first inning. Courtney Billington opened the game with single to right field. Haley Elliott reached base when Indiana State’s left fielder dropped the ball. A throwing error by the shortstop also occurred on the play which allowed Billington to score.
The Lady Bisons out-hit Indiana State 6-3. Vanessa Medina and Caroline Mason each had two hits for the Lady Bisons. Each of them also had a double.
Whitney Kiihnl pitched the final five innings. She gave up one hit and struck out six.
Lady Bisons 3, Radford 1
The Lady Bisons jumped out to a two run lead in the first inning and held on for the win against Radford.
With two outs in the first inning Mollie Mitchell walked. Elliott slammed a two-run homer, her second in as many games, over the left field fence at Bulldog Field at Samford.
Radford answered with a run in the first capitalizing on an error and a single to left field.
The Lady Bisons added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as the Lady Bisons hit three singles. Billington’s single brought in Bridgette Begle with a run. Begle and Mason had the other singles.
Kiihnl went the distance for the Lady Bisons. She scattered four hits and the run she allowed was unearned. She did not walk a batter and struck out seven.
The Lady Bisons connected for five hits off of Chelsea Kelley who took the loss for Radford. She struck out two and walked two. Sunday at 11:30 they will play St. Louis before returning to Nashville.
