Saturday, March 19, 2011The Lipscomb Lady Bisons split a pair of games Saturday in the second day of the Chanticleer Challenge.
The Lady Bisons opened the day with an 8-2 win over Providence College in Conway, S.C., and closed with a 4-3 loss to Georgia Tech at Myrtle Beach.
After spotting Providence a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning they came back to score all eight of their runs in the top of the seventh.
Vanessa Medina opened the seventh with a single through the left side. Lacy Walker replaced Medina as a pinch-runner. Caroline Mason walked. Rena’ Cothron pinch-hit for Haley Elliott and grounded out to second moving Mason to second and Walker to third.
Bridgette Begle singled to second to bring in Walker and Mason. Bree Thurman singled up the middle. Mackenzie Tucker reached base on a fielder’s choice. Courtney Billington also singled to second and brought in Begle and Thurman.
Medina, batting for the second time in the inning, hit a grand slam to left center.
Mason led the Lady Bisons with three hits. Begle had two hits. The Lady Bisons finished with nine hits. Medina’s home run was the only extra base hit in the game.
J.J. Nelson started against Providence and gave up five hits and two runs in four innings. She struck out one and walked three.
Ali Watson relieved and threw three shutout innings for the win to even her record at 1-1. She allowed one hit and struck out two. In game two the Lady Bisons faced Georgia Tech, 22-5, for the second time in as many games.
The Lady Bisons struck first scoring two runs in the third inning. With one out Begle reached base on a bunt single. Thurman hit a home run to left center.
Mollie Mitchell and Tucker also had hits for the Lady Bisons.
Georgia Tech answered with one run in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Whitney Kiihnl threw a complete game for the Lady Bisons. She scattered seven hits, including a solo home run and an RBI-double to Shannon Bear.
Kiihnl, 8-6, struck out 10 and walked three.
The Lady Bisons, 10-11, close out the tournament Sunday against host Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m.
