The Lipscomb baseball team fell to Tennessee Tech 12-9 in non-conference action at Bush Stadium in Cookeville, Tenn., Tuesday night.

The Bisons led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the second but the Golden Eagles scored three in the second, three in the third and five in the sixth to hold off the Bisons for the second time this year.

Lipscomb had plenty of opportunities Tuesday to bring home a victory to Nashville but the Bisons stranded 12 runners on base including bases loaded in the second, sixth and seventh innings.

The Bison pitching staff didn’t help its own cause as well, issuing nine free passes (eight walks and one hit-by-pitch) on Tuesday.

After both teams went three up and three down in the first inning, the Bisons exploded for five runs on four hits in the top of the second to take an early 5-0 lead. Matt Brewer’s second inning two-RBI double to the gap in left-center scored Tennyson Dodd and Josh Chism to give the Bisons an early 2-0 lead. Kyle Henry and Ricky Coleman then walked to load the bases for M.L. Williams. Williams came through in the clutch as he looped a soft-liner into right-field for a one-out two-RBI single to give the Bisons a 4-0 advantage. The junior outfielder later scored in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 5-0 in favor of Lipscomb. The Bisons had a chance to add more runs and potentially break the game open in the second inning but they left the bases loaded.

Tennessee Tech (20-25) started to chip away at the Bisons lead in the bottom of the second with three runs of their own on four hits.

With the Bisons leading 5-3 after two innings, the Golden Eagles recorded back-to-back two-out home runs off Lipscomb reliever Gil Rehwinkel to take its first lead of the game at 6-5.

Lipscomb tied the game at six when they took advantage of one of Tech’s three errors in the game in the top of the fifth.

One inning later, the Bisons retook the lead at 7-6 on Josh Chism’s one-out RBI-single in the top of the sixth. M.L. Williams led off the sixth with a single to center and then stole second base before moving to third on T.J. Hoelzer’s ground out. Richie Goodenow then walked before Chism notched his team-high 35th RBI of the season.

With the Bisons holding onto a slim lead (7-6), Tennessee Tech sent eight batters to the plate and took advantage of two walks and hit by pitch in what led to a five-run bottom of the sixth for the home team.

Lipscomb trailed 11-7 until chipping away at the Golden Eagles lead with two runs on one hit in the top of the seventh to cut the Golden Eagle to 11-9.

Tech outhit Lipscomb 11-10 on Tuesday as the Bisons fell to 9-15 in non-conference play.

Offensively Brewer, Chism, Hoelzer and Williams led the Bisons with two hits a piece Tuesday.

The Bisons will entertain the nation’s 15th-ranked team this weekend as they host the Hatters of Stetson University for a three-game series at Ken Dugan Field.

Friday’s game against the Hatters (37-11 overall, 20-4 A-Sun) will be at 6 p.m., under the lights at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium. Saturday’s game will be “Senior Day” and it will start at 2 p.m., while Sunday’s game is at Noon.
