SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Jacksonville’s Karson Tuck hit a go ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Dolphins to a 3-1 win against the Lady Bisons Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Championship at Cyrill Stadium.
Lipscomb will play the winner of No. 5 Mercer and No. 4 Campbell, currently in progress, at 4:30 p.m. central time in the consolation bracket. The game is an elimination game.
Lipscomb ace pitcher Whitney Kiihnl tossed five near-perfect innings to start the contest giving up only one hit. She encountered trouble in the sixth after allowing a leadoff walk. Following a pop out, Kiihnl gave up a single to left field placing runners on first and second.
Tuck connected on a long home run over the left field fence to give Jacksonville the 3-1 advantage.
Lipscomb scored in the first following leadoff singles by Breanna Thurman and Kiihnl. The runners moved over a base on a groundout by Caroline Mason. After a strike out by Mollie Mitchell, Courtney Billington delivered an infield single to third base driving in Thurman.
Billington has driven in both of Lipscomb’s runs in the tournament. She is also the only Lady Bisons starter that has not yet struck out.
Lipscomb notched three hits over the final six frames with all three hits coming from Mackenzie Tucker who finished three-of-three on the afternoon.
Jacksonville pitcher Sarah Sigrest, an All-Conference first team selection, pitched a complete game allowing one earned run of six hits to improve to 25-5.
Kiihnl dropped to 20-10 as she gave up three earned runs on three hits. She struck out seven and walked five.
The winner of tonight’s matchup advances to Saturday’s championship game against Jacksonville. Lipscomb would need to beat the Dolphins twice to capture the tournament title and an auto-bid to the NCAA tournament.
