Junior Tyler Burkhardt came off the bench and provided a sorely-needed offensive boost for the Bisons, scoring his season’s first goal in the game’s 37th minute. Sophomore midfielder Kyle Erickson provided the assist, the first assist and point earned of his Lipscomb career.
For the junior from Harrisburg, Pa. it marked the third goal of his career. It was the Bisons first offensive goal since Jeremy Reid’s 74th-minute score against Memphis, back on August 28.
Burkardt’s tally took the Bisons into halftime with a 1-0 advantage. Senior Brent McGee stopped one shot in net during the opening frame, while Lipscomb’s offense came to life in a big way, firing 11 shots and putting six on net.
The one shot on goal against McGee came via an Ayao Sossou shot in the game’s 24th minute. After collecting that one safely, McGee wouldn’t be challenged again in the match, earning his first shutout of 2011 and the seventh clean sheet of his Lipscomb career.
Sophomore Nick Bibb took three first-half shots, while seniors Andrew Chamberlain and Evan McGee each put two shots on goal.
Lipscomb kept the pressure on in the second half, firing 10 more shots for a season-high total of 21, including 10 on goal. Burkhardt had five shots, while Bibb contributed four attempts. Those two joined Chamberlain and McGee with two shots on goal.
All told, Lipscomb produced by far its best offensive showing of the season, even earning a season-high in corner kicks (seven) and the first offside call of the 2011 campaign.
Youth was served for Lipscomb against the Keydets. Lipscomb started four freshmen (Ben Gates, Zander El-Hindi, Omar Djabi and Evan Beutler), with Djabi playing the full 90 minutes.
The Bisons will enjoy their first taste of victory in 2011 and return to E.S. Rose Park, Sunday, with another win in their sights. Lipscomb will play Georgia Southern at 12:05 p.m. in both squads second appearance in the Mafiaoszo Belmont Tournament.
