EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Despite a furious second-half comeback, Lipscomb (1-7-2) couldn’t quite topple SIU-Edwardsville (5-2-2) in the Bisons final non-conference match of the season, falling 3-2 Saturday night.
The Bisons trend of allowing an early goal continued when the Cougars Jared Tejada deposited his season’s second goal into the net, off an assist from Brian Groark in the game’s 13th minute. It marks the fifth consecutive game Lipscomb has allowed a goal less than 15 minutes into the contest.
SIU-Edwardsville would go up 2-0 minutes later on Derek Huffman’s second goal of 2011. He collected a cross from Matt Polster and put it away on the right side in the 16th minute.
It would be a tough first half for Lipscomb, which got a mere three shots and saw Jeremy Reid pick up a yellow card.
The second half would be an entirely different story, thanks to sophomore Nick Bibb. The Hoover, Ala. native scored his season’s first goal in the 58th minute, collecting a pass from freshman Ben Gates and firing it past the keeper from 10 yards out.
Bibb would strike again a minute later, taking a pass from Reid at the edge of the box and firing towards the net. Cougars keeper Scott Meyer got a hand on it, but the ball got by him and into the net.
Just when it seemed as though the Bisons had all the momentum, the SIU-Edwardsville offense woke up. Dormant since its early scoring binge in the first half, the Cougars got a 68th-minute goal from Patrick Clendenny. Groark picked up his second assist of the evening on the 12-yard strike, Clendenny’s season-first.
Lipscomb begins its conference schedule next weekend, traveling to USC Upstate (Sept. 30, 6 p.m.) and ETSU (Oct. 2, 12 noon) to begin its quest for the Atlantic Sun tournament.
