KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State (5-4-1, 1-1 Atlantic Sun) scored twice in the game’s first 10 minutes and then sat back, keeping Lipscomb (2-8-1) out of the net and taking down the Bisons, 4-0.
“We did not show up to play in the first half,” said head coach Jon Ireland. “We regrouped at halftime and the second half was much improved, but credit Kennesaw State for finishing their chances.”
Kennesaw State wasted no time getting warmed up against the Lady Bisons. The Owls went up one goal in the game’s fourth minute on a tap-in by A-Sun leading scorer Katrina Frost, who collected a corner kick from Sofia Blanco that deflected off of Katie Schwartz.
Three minutes later, Schwartz would add another goal for the Owls, heading in another Blanco corner for her season’s first goal.
Lipscomb’s offensive woes continued in this one. Freshman Baylee Linnell’s 58th-minute shot, saved by Kennesaw State keeper Mel Hutto, represented Lipscomb’s first and only shot on goal in the game. Overall, Lipscomb was outshot an astounding 29-3, with 17 of Kennesaw State’s shots being on goal.
“We were short-handed again today, but other girls have to be able to step up,” Ireland said. “We just didn’t play well defensively, and that hurts your offense too.”
Frost would later add her A-Sun leading 10th goal of 2011, breaking away from the Lipscomb defense and beating keeper Allison Brown one-on-one for the goal in the 71st minute.
In just her second career start, Brown was tested from the very beginning against Kennesaw State. She responded by making a career-high 13 saves, tied for fifth-best mark in school history for a single game.
With just seconds remaining, the Owls Brittany Vining would head in an Alyssa Mahan corner kick for Kennesaw State’s final goal of the afternoon.
“We made three mistakes on corners and they capitalized every time,” Ireland said. “Everyone has to play at a high level and understand their roles.”
Lipscomb will host its first home Atlantic Sun games of the season next weekend, when ETSU (Sept. 30, 7:30 p.m.) and USC Upstate (Oct. 2, 1 p.m.) visit Nashville.
