NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball team makes its first, but one of its shortest road trips of the season on Thursday night making the trek across town to face Tennessee State at 7 p.m. at the Gentry Center.
Both squads head into the contest looking for their first win of 2011-12 after identical 0-2 starts to begin the season. The Lady Bisons opened the season with close losses to Air Force and Austin Peay while the Lady Tigers dropped road contests at Cleveland State and Ohio State.
“I really like the way we’re playing very hard,” said Lipscomb head coach Frank Bennett. “We’ve got to work a little bit on our consistency. We’ve had some dead spells in some of the games where we don’t execute well, get frustrated and don’t get much accomplished sometimes.”
Hitting the road to TSU for the first of five-straight road contests, the Lady Bisons are outshooting their opponents .382 to .374 and have outrebounded their foes 82-74. Lipscomb opponents hold a decided advantage however at the charity strip, outshooting the Lady Bisons .625-.551.
The opponent: Tennessee State heads into Thursday night’s contest shooting .346 on the season compared to a blistering .481 for their opponents. Junior guard Jasmin Shuler leads the Lady Tigers having scored 18 points in both games this season for TSU. Destiny Gaston and Tayla Foster each average eight points a game as part of a 53.5 average for the squad.
Freshman forward Chelsea Hudson leads the squad in rebounding averaging 5.5 boards per contest.
Up next: The Lady Bisons head south for a Saturday evening tilt at Alabama A&M in the Huntsville at 5 p.m. followed by a Monday-evening contest at Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Ala.
