CANCUN - Freshman Zavion Williams scored 28 points, including 13 from the free throw line, and sophomore Robert Boyd hit a three-pointer with 3.8 seconds remaining to lift the Bisons to a 90-87 win against SIU Edwardsville Tuesday in the Cancun Challenge.
The win snapped a three-game skid for the Bisons (2-3) and left SIU Edwardsville winless on the season (0-3).
Playing on a court placed in the middle of a ballroom at Moon Palace Resort, Lipscomb had the hot shooting hand early hitting six of its first eight attempts taking a 15-8 lead less than four minutes into the game.
The momentum transitioned into the Cougars favor as the Bisons were only able to find the bottom of the net seven times the rest of the half.
SIU Edwardsville took a 46-39 lead into the locker room after hitting 18 first half field goals, a tally higher than it made in all 40 minutes in each of its opening two games.
Coach Scott Sanderson’s Bisons came back from the break with defensive intensity and they found their shooting groove.
A quick field goal by senior Justin Glenn and a SIU Edwardsville turnover leading to two free throws put the Bisons within two points, 46-43, less than 38 seconds into the second half.
Lipscomb then used a 6-0 run accented by a steal and fastbreak dunk by Damarius Smith to take a 56-52 lead at the 14:43 mark.
From there the teams remained within five points of each other until the Bisons hit four free throws over three possessions to seemingly seal the game, up by eight, with 1:42 to play.
The young Bisons squad was unable to make the necessary defensive stops to close out the game allowing SIU Edwardsville to score on its next four possessions. A three by Corey Wickware with 45 seconds left brought the Cougars within two, 87-85.
The Bisons subsequently turned the ball over and Boyd was whistled for a foul in the ensuing scramble. Wickware hit both free throw attempts to tie the game.
With the shot clock turned off, Sanderson let 20 seconds roll off the game clock before calling a timeout to set the offense with 12 ticks remaining.
Williams took the inbounds pass and threw it to Boyd in the left corner near the Bisons’ bench for the open 3-pointer for the go-ahead points.
The Bisons were 28-of-39 from the free throw line (71.8 percent) and hit 49.1 percent (28-of-57) of its attempts from the field.
SIU Edwardsville shot 56.4 percent from the field (31-of-55) and 47.8 percent from beyond the arc (11-of-23). The Cougars hit 14-of-20 free throw attempts
Damarius Smith and Jacob Arnett tied for a game-high six rebounds. Williams had seven assists and two steals.
Lipscomb advances to the championship game off the Mayan Division Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Hampton or Sacred Heart. The game will be broadcast on 102.1 The Light and on LipscombSports.com.
