NASHVILLE, Tenn. –The Lipscomb women’s tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Friday night with a 6-1 victory over Western Kentucky at Whitworth Country Club in Nashville.
"Looking back at the matches this evening, you can certainly tell by the reflection of the scores our players were much more comfortable competing since their season openers,” head coach Andrew Harris said. “Having our women come out and play with the amount of resolve and fortitude will hopefully serve well heading into the UTC match (Saturday).”
The Lady Bison took a quick 1-0 lead when they picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Senior Elizabeth Keevil and freshman Jenny Borck defeated Carolina Barboza and Alex Crofford at No. 2 by a score of 8-6, while seniors Danielle Hansen and Samantha Bowman took down Madeline Phillips and Morgan Freeman at No. 3 8-5.
The Lady Bison’s only doubles loss came at No. 1, where junior Alyssa Bellini and freshman Deahna Welcher fell to Monta Reinfelde and McKinley Mason in a tie-breaker, falling 9-8 (7-4).
With a 1-0 lead, the Lady Bison tacked on five more singles wins to close the match with a 6-1 victory.
Welcher easily took down Mason at No. 2, winning 6-1, 6-2, while Borck recorded a win at No. 3, defeating Barboza 6-3, 6-0.
Keevil posted a solid 6-1, 6-1 win over Crofford at No. 4. At No. 5, Hansen defeated Phillips 6-2, 6-2, while Bowman closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Freeman at No. 6.
Bellini posted Lipscomb’s only loss with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Reinfelde at No. 1.
The win evens the Lady Bison’s record to 1-1 for the season.
The Lady Bison travel across state later today to take on Chattanooga at 6 pm.
