NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s tennis team picked up their second win of the season on Saturday night when they defeated Alabama A&M 6-1 at the Whitworth Racquet Club in Nashville.
"It certainly is good to get back on track,” head coach Andrew Harris said. “We were telling them after their match against Evansville that the best remedy for a not good performance is to come out the next night and show what you are capable of. Alabama A&M played well and everyone knew we were going to have to execute some shots to finish the match. The Lady Bison did that and now its time for UT-Martin on Friday."
The Lady Bison took an early lead after securing the doubles point with two wins.
Senior Elizabeth Keevil and freshman Jenny Borck teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles, beating Denise Cherry and Jessica Taylor 8-6, while seniors Samantha Bowman and Danielle Hansen shut out Christa Rogers and Jasmine Cherry 8-0 at No. 3.
The Lady Bison’s dropped No. 1 doubles, where sophomore Alyssa Bellini and freshman Deahna Welcher fell to Warner and Shaw 8-3.
Lipscomb carried the momentum over to singles play, picking up five of their six singles matches.
At No. 2, Welcher pulled out a three-set win, defeating D. Cherry 6-7(1-7), 6-4, 6-3, while Borck picked up a three-setter at No. 3, winning 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Keevil defeated J. Cherry at No. 4 6-1, 6-4, and Hansen took down Taylor 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 at No. 5.
Bowman shut out her opponent, defeating Rogers 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
The Lady Bison’s only loss came at No. 1, where Bellini was defeated in a three-set match by Morgen Shaw, falling 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
With the win, Lipscomb improves to 2-3 on the season.
The next match for the Lady Bison will be Friday, Feb. 10 against UT Martin. Match play will begin at 7 p.m. at the Whitworth Racquet Club.
