NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Lipscomb women’s cross country team was one of 205 Division I teams to achieve 2011 USTFCCCA All-Academic cross country team status, the coaches association announced Monday. With a 3.48 team grade-point average, Lipscomb was tied for 55th-highest in the nation with Appalachian State, Dartmouth, Gonzaga, Iona, Morehead State and UNC-Greensboro.
Georgetown earned cross country scholar team of the year after earning the school’s first-ever NCAA cross country crown. The Hoyas actually had a lower team GPA than Lipscomb at 3.28.
The University of Alabama earned the highest team GPA for the 2011 year with a 3.83 average. The Lady Bison finished behind prestigious academic universities such as Duke, Stanford, Vanderbilt and Yale.
In the fall, sophomore Tessa Hoefle became Lipscomb’s first-ever A-Sun Scholar Athlete of the Year in any sport thanks to her first-team all-conference finish and 4.0 GPA in English. Senior Ashley Lehman was named to the Academic All-Conference team, boasting a 3.97 GPA in elementary education.
“I am proud of our women’s team for earning national honors again,” said Lipscomb head coach Bill Taylor. “We continue to demonstrate a high commitment to academic achievement and remain one of the top academic teams in the nation.
“Although still in the top 30 percent in the nation, our women are lower ranked than we are used to. It looks like a lot of schools across the nation have improved pretty dramatically. Still, I hope we continue to improve and whether the average national GPA is higher in the future or not, we want to rise to the top of the rankings again.”
Lipscomb’s women posted the third-highest GPA among Atlantic Sun teams. The Lady Bison finished behind Belmont (3.60 GPA) and Mercer (3.57 GPA). Three other A-Sun squads (Kennesaw State, North Florida, USC Upstate) also attained All-Academic status.
