NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball opens the home portion of the schedule this weekend, hosting Butler and Samford in the Lady Bison Round Robin at Draper Diamond. Play begins Saturday at 11 a.m. when the Lady Bison play Butler; three games will be played on both Saturday and Sunday.

Senior Mollie Mitchell (.364) and junior Kelsey Cartwright (.333) led Lipscomb in hitting last weekend, while junior Bree Thurman smacked the Lady Bison’s lone home run. In their first collegiate action, Gracey Aguirre (.273 average, did not strike out) and Ashley Anderson (10.1 innings pitched, seven strike outs) showed promise for Kristin Ryman’s squad.

Senior starting pitcher Whitney Kiihnl went 1-2 last weekend, earning her 72nd career victory; she is five away from tying Stetson’s Erica Demers (2006-09) for fourth on the Atlantic Sun all-time wins list.

Last Time Against This Weekend’s Opponents

Butler and Samford were both Lady Bison opponents in 2011. At the UAB Magic City Classic, Lipscomb shut down Samford 10-0. Whitney Kiihnl threw a no-hitter and Vanessa Medina homered twice to lead the Lady Bison. Kiihnl threw a one-hitter against Butler, blanking the Bulldogs and leading Lipscomb to a 2-0 win. Mollie Mitchell and Rena’ Cothron drove in runs for the Lady Bison.

Lipscomb Posts 1-3 Record at USA Mardi Gras

After winning the season-opener against Jacksonville State, the Lady Bison lost three straight to end the Mardi Gras Invitational. SEC foes Mississippi State (3-1) and second-ranked Alabama (15-4) downed the Lady Bison in back-to-back games. Host South Alabama closed out the tournament for Lipscomb by handing the Lady Bison a 6-1 defeat.

Lady Bison Picked to Finish Second, Kiihnl and Mason Earn Preseason A-Sun Honors

Seniors Whitney Kiihnl and Caroline Mason were named to the preseason Atlantic Sun All-Conference team, and Lipscomb was picked to finish second in a vote of the conference coaches. Kiihnl was chosen as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year by a fan vote on the A-Sun’s Facebook page.

Kiihnl, Mason Named to College Sports Madness Preseason First Team

Seniors Whitney Kiihnl and Caroline Mason were named to the preseason All-Conference first-team in the websites first-ever softball vote. Both were all-conference selections in 2011 for the Lady Bison.

Fact of the Weekend

Lipscomb has won its first five home games each of the past two seasons.

On Deck

The Lady Bison will be on the road again for the College of Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C., Feb. 24-26. Lipscomb will face Virginia Tech, Wagner, Louisiana-Monroe, MTSU and College of Charleston. Lipscomb’s next 10 games will be on the road or at neutral sites.
