KENNESAW, Ga. – Behind a school-record eight 3-pointers from senior guard Anna Bowers, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team closed out the 2011-12 slate with a 72-64 Atlantic Sun Conference road win over Kennesaw State at the KSU Convocation Center in Kennesaw.
Bowers came out and led the Lady Bison (6-23, 4-14 A-Sun) in the first half draining four treys for a dozen points. Lipscomb led at the half thanks to nine 3-pointers as a team missing only four as the Lady Bison shot 69 percent beyond the arch. The sharpshooting helped Lipscomb build a 40-28 advantage over Kennesaw State (13-16, 8-10 A-Sun).
Playing with only eight players available on the bench, Lipscomb continued the long-range barrage in the second half behind as Bowers drained a pair of threes to open the second half and push the lead to 18 points. The Owls would not give up in the second stanza however, eventually cutting the Lipscomb lead down to three at 65-62 with 1:36 to play.
A three-pointer by senior Leah McAlister pushed the cushion back out to six for Lipscomb before Bowers hit a layup and junior guard Morgan Faulkner hit a pair of free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
Bowers finished with 26 points on the night, one off her career high of 27. She was joined in double figures by McAlister with a dozen and Faulkner and O’Neisha Smith, who each added 10 apiece. Senior post Brittany Duerk led the Lady Bison on the glass with seven rebounds.
The Lady Bison were outrebounded 50-38 by the Lady Owls but made up for it with the long-range shooting and attempts at the free-throw line where Lipscomb was 18-of-25 from the charity stripe.
The win snapped a six-game losing skid for the Lady Bison.
Saturday’s win marks the final contests for Bowers, McAlister and Duerk, who have completed their eligibility.
