LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Coming off three straight losses, the Lady Bison softball team entered Sunday searching for a second victory to end the Citrus Classic at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
Behind another complete-game performance from senior Whitney Kiihnl, Lipscomb defeated St. John’s 8-2 Sunday morning. The win moves the Lady Bison to 9-6 in 2012, and they exit the Citrus Classic with a 2-3 record.
Lipscomb scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take an early lead. Juniors Bree Thurman and Kelsey Cartwright each reached base via error, with Thurman scoring from second on the error that allowed Cartwright to reach base. After senior Caroline Mason walked, sophomore Haley Elliott singled to score Cartwright.
Mason would score the final Lady Bison run of the first inning after sophomore Kristen Sturdivant grounded into a fielder’s choice.
Mason factored into the scoring in the second inning as well. After Kiihnl singled and sophomore Rena’ Cothron drew a walk, Mason slugged a three-run home run to left-center field in the top of the second inning, running Lipscomb’s lead to 6-0.
Lipscomb would leave the bases loaded in the third inning. Sturdivant reached on an error, followed by a double from sophomore Bridgette Begle. Kiihnl singled via bunt to load the bases with one out, but Thurman (strike out) and Cothron (ground out to short stop) couldn’t bring runs across.
Two more would come across for Lipscomb in the fourth. After a Cartwright walk and a Mason single, Sturdivant would bring both around to score with a double to center field.
St. John’s would strike in the bottom of the fifth. Chrissy Montez singled and MacKenna Neuroth was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Pinch-hitter Meghan Gwynn singled to center to score Montez.
Neuroth would later score on an error, but that would be all the Red Storm would push across against Kiihnl, who was solid on the mound. She moves to 9-3 on the season with her ninth complete game. Against St. John’s, she struck out seven and scattered six hits, with only one run earned.
Mason was the big bat for Lipscomb on the day, going 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored.
Mason (.313) joined Cartwright (.375), Kiihnl (.364) and Cothron (.333) in hitting better than .300 this weekend. Mason and Cartwright each hit two home runs over five games in the Sunshine State.
Lipscomb returns home this week for a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with IPFW beginning at 2 p.m. The Lady Bison Classic runs all next weekend at Draper Diamond, beginning Friday at 2:15 p.m.
