KENNESAW, Ga. – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team fell to 1-2 in conference play with a 4-3 road loss to Kennesaw State University, Sunday.
The Bison jumped out to an early lead after picking up the doubles point to go up 1-0. Junior Oliver Strecker and sophomore Miguel Cortez secured a win at No. 1 doubles, defeating Simon Janik and Michael Browder 8-4.
At No. 3, junior Colby Shaw and sophomore David Salazar took down Alex Toliver and Matthew Johnson 8-5.
The Bison’s only doubles loss came at No. 2, where senior Chad Pierron and freshman Stuart Tierney fell to Louis Theodor and Gokalp Ozdemir 8-4.
With a 1-0 lead, the Bison entered into singles competition, but unfortunately they were unable to carry over the momentum from doubles.
The Bison recorded only two singles wins out of their six matches.
Strecker posted a victory for the Bison at No. 1, where he took down Toliver 6-3, 6-4. At No. 3, freshman Daniel Hernandez posted the Bison’s other singles win with a victory over Janik 6-4, 6-4.
At No. 2, Salazar came up just short of the win, losing in three sets to Theodor 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Tierney’s match at No. 4 ended early after he sustained an injury, trailing 7-5, 3-0 before retiring. At No. 5, Shaw fell to Gianni Kubin 6-2, 6-2, and Cortez was defeated at No. 6 by Alexander Pena 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).
"First of all, we want to give KSU credit in that match for getting the victory,” head coach Andrew Harris said. “Their guys played really well today in completing the comeback. Unfortunately for us, we had a difficult time in the singles and did not play at the level that was needed in order to win today.
“This week now we must get ready to get back at it because we have ETSU and USC Upstate coming in, and the guys must now respond at home.”
The Bison return home and will host East Tennessee State University on Friday, March 30. Match play will begin at 2 pm at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.
