KENNESAW, Ga. – The Lipscomb women’s tennis team fell 6-1 to Atlantic Sun foe Kennesaw State, Sunday, to close out its trip through Georgia.
The loss came after a 4-3 win over Mercer on Saturday, but the momentum did not carry over.
"We knew going into the match that there would be some opportunities if we were able to execute, but KSU did a great job of showing their strength,” said head coach Andrew Harris. “Doubles from this weekend continue to be a good thing to build on, and we need to be looking at that as an opportunity to get the matches off on the right start. We get to be at home starting on Friday and are looking forward to that."
The Lady Bison were unable to pick up a doubles win, putting them behind early.
Freshmen Deahna Welcher and Jenny Borck were defeated at No. 1 doubles by Virginie Stein and Alexandra Apostu 8-4. At No. 2, seniors Elizabeth Keevil and Danielle Hansen fell to Vera Shkundina and Therese Lagerkvist 8-3.
At No. 3, sophomore Alyssa Bellini and senior Samantha Bowman were defeated by Jana Hueckinghaus and Kelsey Kennedy 8-6.
Down 1-0, the Lady Bison headed into singles play, where they were only able to secure one match.
The Lady Bison’s lone victory came at No. 6. Bowman handily took down Kennedy 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 1, Bellini fell to Shkundina 6-1, 6-0, while Welcher was defeated at No. 2 by Apostu 6-4, 6-3.
Borck came up short at No. 3, losing to Stein 6-1, 6-4, and Keevil was shut out at No. 5 by Hueckinghaus 6-0, 6-0.
Hansen lost at No. 5 to Lagerkvist 6-1, 6-1.
The Lady Bison will return home and prepare to host East Tennessee State University on Friday, March 20. Match play will begin at 2 pm at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.
