NASHVILLE, Tenn. –The Lipscomb men’s tennis team is heading to the 2012 Atlantic Sun Championship Tournament as the No. 4 seed this weekend in their first ever back-to-back appearances. The Bisons will play No. 5 South Carolina Upstate in their first round match on Friday, April 20 at 7:30 a.m. in Johnson City, Tenn.
“I think the biggest difference this year from last year is the different mentality the guys have coming into the first round match,” Lipscomb head coach Andrew Harris says. “I think it’s a good matchup for us, obviously, not only because we won the first time we played Upstate, but it’s better than being the sixth seed or something to that extent, where you’re having to really play up in order to win your first match. I think this is great.
“Of all the matchups, this is a good matchup for us. The guys hopefully have the same attitude as they did a couple weeks ago coming into it instead of having that sense of desperation.”
Harris says the team will be looking for experienced players to step up as leaders heading into the tournament.
“Individually, I know Chad Pierron has been a great leader for us this year. Tanner Brown has also been doing a great job, and we’re looking forward to their leadership on Friday morning.
The Bisons finished the regular season 4-5 in conference play (9-11 overall), while USC Upstate posted the same A-Sun record (11-9 overall).
In their previous matchup again Upstate, the Bisons recorded a 4-3 win.
The doubles point, which the Bisons won 2-1 in their first meeting, will once again prove to be pivotal for LU to start out on top.
Lipscomb also posted wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4, with two of their three losses ending in three sets.
Should the Bisons win on Friday, they will remain in Johnson City for the second round on Saturday, where they will face No. 1 ETSU.
