MACON, Ga. – Four Lipscomb Lady Bison track and field athletes and five members of the men’s team were named to the Atlantic Sun’s Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic team the conference office announced, Friday.
Seniors Ashley Lehman and Brittany Duerk and sophomores Tessa Hoefle and Katie Bunker were among the 18 female student-athletes to earn the honor for the 2012 outdoor campaign. Senior Austin Ray, juniors Isaiah Greer, Geoff Musick, and Ben Wright and sophomore Tucker Peabody were among 13 men’s honorees.
"Obviously I am so proud of our continued pursuit of excellence in the classroom,” said Lipscomb head coach Bill Taylor. “As we continually raise the bar athletically, it is a testament to the type of student-athlete we attract, that our academic achievements are as high or higher than they have ever been, in a program that has always been known as one of the top NCAA Division I academic programs in the nation. I am looking forward to even more academic, social, spiritual and of course athletic growth in the years to come."
Lehman was one of only two unanimous choices for the team. She graduated on Saturday with a degree in elementary education after achieving a 3.97 GPA in the program while at Lipscomb. She was the silver medalist at the A-Sun Outdoor Championships in the 10,000m run with a school-record 36:09.71s run.
Hoefle, who was fifth in the 10K at the A-Sun Championships, earned her third All-Academic honor this year. The 4.0-carrying English major was named Academic All-Conference for indoor track and was Scholar Athlete of the Year in cross country.
Bunker was the other Lady Bison holdover from the Indoor Academic All-Conference team. She has a 3.77 in chemistry and was A-Sun Female Runner of the Week for April 14.
The dual-sport star who joined the team mid-season after the conclusion of her senior basketball season, Duerk graduated with a 3.85 in biochemistry. She just missed medaling at the A-Sun Championships with a 36.14m javelin throw.
Greer (3.55 GPA) and Musick (3.86) were unanimous selections and have both been named Academic All-Conference for cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field.
Peabody earned two gold medals and two bronzes at the A-Sun Outdoor Championships; he was also an Indoor Academic All-Conference honoree.
Ray, whose brother Logan was an indoor honoree, finishes his career with a 3.47 GPA in molecular biology. He finished sixth in the javelin at the A-Sun Outdoor Championships.
Wright, who finished fifth in the 3000m steeplechase at the A-Sun Championships, carries a 3.81 GPA in sustainability management.
USC Upstate’s Gilbert Kemboi and Kennesaw State’s Christie Leverette were named men’s and women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year.
