Lady Bisons honored by AVCA for work in classroom

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Three-time defending Atlantic Sun Conference champions, the Lipscomb volleyball team has been honored for their third-straight season in the classroom as well earning the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

The Lady Bisons joined 102 other NCAA Division I women’s volleyball teams in earning the honor by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.  Lipscomb finished well above the threshold with a 3.5 team GPA.

“I'm very proud of our team for once again receiving the AVCA Team Academic Award,” said Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal.  “In addition, I'm glad that the AVCA chooses to put emphasis on the academic side of the term ‘student-athlete’.

“It's even more rewarding in a year in which we won a championship to see these girls, whose schedules are extremely demanding, persevere and perform exceptionally well in the classroom as well as on the court.  As I have said many of times, I ask each one of these girls to give their absolute best to every aspect of this program and it is awesome to see them be recognized for their hard work and dedication.

The award comes on the heels of 10 Lady Bisons earning A-Sun All-Academic honors in June along with Katie Rose and Caitlin Dotson earning A-Sun All-Academic Team laurels last fall.

“Being a student-athlete is hard, but what I find more important is that our girls continue to find a way to get the job done not make excuses in regards to time along the way” continued Rosenthal.  “This award is a credit to the faculty that our girls are involved with on a daily basis.  It is tremendous to see the support that we receive from our faculty and their continued interest in the lives of our team and their academic and athletic success.”

The Lady Bisons open the 2012 campaign at the University of Kentucky Invitational on Aug. 24.
