NASHVILLE, Tenn. – First-year Lipscomb women’s soccer coach Kevin O’Brien got a chance to see his team in a game situation Friday evening in the exhibition version of the “Battle of the Boulevard.”
Long-time Rival Belmont scored a late goal to take a 2-1 victory at Rose Park.
After a scoreless first half the Lady Bisons got on the scoreboard first as Baylee Linnell broke free from the defense and scooted a goal under the attacking Bruins goalkeeper Nicole Berner, just 58 seconds into the second half.
The Bruins struck just two minutes later when Taylor Smith found the back of the net with an assist from Sydney Scheben.
In the 72nd minute, LU had an opportunity to score as Caroline Chadwell hit a well-struck ball that Berner made a save on, preventing the Bisons lead.
In the 85th minute, LU goalkeeper Erin Zerio put a phenomenal diving save on Lauren Paynter’s shot. On the ensuing corner kick, the Bruins connected with a header from Laura Harris to take the 2-1 lead and the victory.
LU took seven shots, placing five on goal. Chadwell had five shots with Linnel and Karli Crosby each taking one apiece.
The Lady Bisons will open regular season play on Friday Aug. 17 as they play host to Jackson State in a 7 p.m. affair at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
