HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. –Caitlin Dotson and Lauren Ford set career highs against Northern Kentucky as the Lipscomb volleyball team won its opening Atlantic Sun Conference match 3-2 (16-25, 25-15, 23-25, 26-24, 15-13) at Regents Hall in Highland Heights, Ky., on Tuesday night.
Dotson continues to track down the 1,000th career assist milestone. The junior had a career-high 54 assists in the match, giving her a total of 995 career assists. The Louisville, Ky., native recorded a double-double by adding 11 digs.
“Dot did a great job running the offense,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “She understood who was hot. Our outside hitters were fantastic tonight.”
Ford also had a double-double with a career-high 20 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Jewell Dobson missed out setting a career-high as she tied her career best with 16 kills.
The third Lady Bison with double-digits kills was senior Kaycee Green, who set a season-high with 17 kills.
In the first set, the Lady Bisons (4-8, 1-0 A-Sun) got down three early at 10-7, before the Norse (12-2, 0-1 A-Sun) scored the next five points and cruised to a 25-16 win in the opening set.
LU got off to a better start in the second set with an early 5-4 lead. The Lady Bisons then outscored NKU 11-3 to extend its lead and eventually won the set 25-15.
Like the opening set, the Lady Bisons found themselves down big at 18-12 but an 11-6 run by Lipscomb closed the contest to 24-23 in the Norse favor. Despite the valiant comeback, NKU finished off the final point and took a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth set.
Determined to come back to Nashville with a win, the Lady Bisons dug deep in the fourth set and battled hard in a back-and-forth stanza that saw the Purple and Gold come out on top 26-24 forcing a fifth set.
NKU started out hot in the fifth set outscoring LU 6-1, but again the Lady Bisons showed resolve and bounced back with a 9-4 run to tie the game 10-10. The teams traded blows and with the score tied at 13 a kill by Ford and a solo block by Green clinched the set and the match 15-13.
“We had errors by players that haven’t made errors all match,” Rosenthal said about the early fifth set. “We had to settle down and control what we can control, our effort.”
Rosenthal was impressed with a couple of Lady Bisons who stepped up in this match. Junior Claire Peterson was one off her career-high with seven kills. Junior Stephanie Rex led the team with 17 digs, sophomore Megan Stout added 10 digs and sophomore Sophie Kellerman had nine digs.
“I’m proud of the girls,” Rosenthal said. “They stepped up to the challenge.”
Lipscomb is 5-1 in its last six A-Sun openers and got their first road win of the season, while NKU dropped their first A-Sun opener and their first home match of the Division I era for the Norse.
