BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The opening night of Lipscomb women’s basketball saw a young Lady Bisons squad fall 64-40 to Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. Saturday night.
Opening night for both squads, Lipscomb falls to 0-1 while GWU starts 1-0.
The Lady Bisons committed 19 turnovers and were outrebounded by 21 including 19 on the Runnin’ Bulldogs offensive end.
Senior guard Hannah Phillips served a game-high with 15 points and paced the Purple and Gold with seven rebounds in 38 minutes of action.
Phillips hit a layup with 7:22 remaining in the first half to cut the GWU lead to 13-10. However a 15-6 run to end the half pushed the Runnin’ Bulldogs lead to 28-16 at intermission.
Opening the second half, a Shanice Burnette lay-up to cut the deficit to 10 but that would be the closest LU could get as Gardner-Webb dominated the boards and forced turnovers.
“You can’t make up possessions you lose like that,” Brown said. “We’ll have two days of practice to correct it.
“We had opportunities. On the road you need to make free throws and get as many easy baskets as you can.”
Freshman point guard Kelli Smith came off the bench to collect seven points and four rebounds.
“She (Smith) came in bringing energy,” Brown said. “She did a good job reading screens and did not have any turnovers. That is a nice job for a freshman in her first collegiate game.”
Lipscomb welcomes cross-town SEC foe Vanderbilt to Allen Arena Monday night for the Commodores first-ever visit along with the first ranked opponent as VU enters ranked No. 16 in the AP Top 25 and No. 17 in the USA Today/ESPN polls.
Tip-off is slated for 7:15 following the men’s game against Maryville and can be seen on ESPN3.
