NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Looking to rebound from a loss at ETSU on Saturday afternoon, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team continues Atlantic Sun Conference action on the road at USC Upstate. Tipoff is schedule for 6 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C., and will be available for viewing on ESPN3.
The Lady Bisons (2-18, 1-9 A-Sun) got off to a slow start at ETSU and ran out of gas after cutting the deficit to 12 points with just over nine minutes to play enroute to an 86-54 setback. Senior Hannah Phillips scored a game-high 18 points in the effort.
Phillips leads Lipscomb with a 12.7 point-per-game average and has scored 967 points in her career, pushing her on the edge of the 1,000-point club. Phillips also averages 5.4 rebounds per contest. Freshman Alex Banks is tied for the lead for A-Sun freshmen with 11.3 points per game in league action.
The Spartans, 8-13 overall and 4-6 in league play, have won three of their last four games with victories over Kennesaw State, Jacksonville and North Florida. The lone loss over that stretch was an 81-61 setback against Northern Kentucky.
Tee’Ara Copney, who scored 23 points against the Lady Bisons in the first meeting of the year, averages 13.2 per game while Brittany Starling snags 5.6 rebounds per game. In Atlantic Sun action, each have upped their averages as Copney scores 14.1 points per game. Starling secures 6.8 rebounds while upping her point total to double-digits with 11.3 points per game.
The team’s first meeting this year was a buzzer-beating thriller as freshman Presley Stastny sank a 3-point basket to win the game 57-56 for the Lady Bisons. Junior Jess Reece scored a team-high 14 points and a conference season-high 17 rebounds.
Coming from the baseline, Phillips found Statsny beyond the 3-point line. Putting the ball on the floor to elude her defender, Stastny took a dribble and calmly sank the game-winning bucket for the Lady Bisons only conference win of the year.
