MARTIN, Tenn. – Going 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position, the Lipscomb baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to homestanding UT-Martin on Tuesday afternoon at Skyhawk Field, in Martin.
“We’ve got to do a better job of minimizing opponents scoring chances and capitalizing on our own,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “When we do those things, we have a good ball team. I’m really looking forward to seeing that happen.”
Things looked good early on for the Bisons (6-11) after pushing across a pair of runs in the first inning. Junior designated hitter Drew Adams opened the contest with a single to right before swiping his fourth base of the season. Sophomore first baseman Griffin Moore followed with his 16th walk of the season before senior shortstop Aaron Sandoval was beaned to load the bases.
Sophomore second baseman Noah Chandler then came through with a two-out single through the right side to give Lipscomb a 2-0 lead over the Skyhawks (7-9). That would be all of the scoring for Lipscomb until the ninth inning however.
UT-Martin would use plate patience to erase the deficit and win the game as three of the four runs would reach via base-on-balls. A one-out walk and a double got the Skyhawks on the scoreboard and ended Jacob Knott’s shutout bid in the third. UT-Martin then drew back-to-back leadoff walks to start the fourth and would then tie the game on a single through the right side.
The tie would hold until the sixth inning when UT-Martin would single and draw a walk followed by a wild pitch to end Knott’s afternoon on the hill. Senior Jordan Zelhart came on in relief of Knott and issued another wild pitch allowing the go-ahead run to score. The Skyhawks then took a two-run cushion with a ground out.
The Bisons would mount a comeback attempt in the ninth as junior left fielder Chad Shannon drew a one-out walk before Adams reached on an error that moved Shannon up to third. Senior catcher Taylor Stewart followed with a sacrifice fly into foul ground that moved both runners up 90 feet and brought Shannon across the plate to make it a 4-3 contest. Moore would then reach on an error that moved Adams 90 feet from home but that is as close as the Bisons would come to tying the game.
Knott took the loss for Lipscomb giving up the four earned runs in five innings of work. The redshirt junior issued five walks and struck out one batter. Zelhart gave up three hits in two-thirds of an inning before senior Tyler Burstrom worked a perfect two and one-third innings to finish the contest.
John Houston earned the win for UT-Martin giving up two earned runs and five hits in six innings of work. Stu Jones earned his fourth save of the season by working the ninth inning for the Skyhawks.
The Bisons return home on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. hosting in-state foe Austin Peay at Dugan Field. To purchase tickets visit http://www.BeHerdLU.com
