JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Stranding 10 runners including seven in scoring position, the Lipscomb baseball team dropped a 5-2 Atlantic Sun Conference decision to homestanding ETSU on Sunday afternoon at Thomas Stadium in Johnson City.
“When you leave runners on against a good team, you make it difficult on yourself,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “ETSU capitalized on our small mistakes but that’s what good baseball teams do. Unfortunately for us we didn’t capitalize when we had a chance to tie or go ahead.”
The Bisons (12-25, 3-9 A-Sun) opened the scoring early in the contest when sophomore first baseman Tyson Ashcraft crushed a pitch over the left field wall for the 1-0 lead.
The lead would be short lived for the Purple and Gold however, as ETSU (21-12, 10-5 A-Sun) would cash in on a Bison error to plate a run in the fourth before adding a run in the fifth to take a 2-1 advantage.
Lipscomb would threaten in the sixth loading the bases but the Bucs were able to get out of the jam before adding an insurance measure in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead.
The Bucs would add a pair of runs in the seventh to push the lead out to 5-1 before the Bisons drove in a run on a two-out single to right field by junior left fielder Chad Shannon that scored junior designated hitter Drew Adams, who led off the stanza with a double down the left field line.
ETSU starter Josh Jacques picked up the win for the Bucs with a one-run, two hit effort in five innings of work.
Lipscomb righty Will Blalock took the loss giving up four earned runs in six innings of work. The redshirt sophomore allowed eight hits and a walk while fanning three ETSU batters.
The Bisons return home on Tuesday night to host Western Kentucky in a nonconference tilt set to begin at 6:05 p.m. at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.
