Men's tennis upsets Stetson; reaches semifinals to face ETSU

Friday, April 19, 2013

BRISTOL, Tenn. - The No. 6 Lipscomb men’s tennis upset the No. 3 Stetson in a historic Atlantic Sun Tournament victory.

Despite a last-minute location change and a lower seed, the men’s tennis team defeated Stetson in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun in a commanding 4-0 victory.

Previously, Stetson had bested the Bisons 4-3 in the regular season in March, but Lipscomb topped the Hatters when it mattered most. The win is the school’s first quarterfinals victory in men’s tennis.

Oliver Strecker, Daniel Hernandez and Stuart Tierney posted up wins in the singles competitions, while the doubles teams of Tierney/Miguel Cortez and Colby Shaw/John Tougher won their respective matches.

With the win at hand, three of the matches went unfinished and another matchup did not start.

Lipscomb coach Andrew Harris applauded the performance of the men’s team.

“It’s just a total team effort from top to bottom,” Harris said.

Last season, the men’s tennis team finished fourth in the conference and walked away from the tournament empty handed.

Harris says that the team felt good about the Stetson matchup, and for Lipscomb, they play matche with confidence.

“The guys went out, and they did a good job today and executed like they needed to,” Harris said.

Harris credits both the familiarity of the matchups and the indoors location as two key factors in the record win.

The men’s team will have a good night’s rest before taking on A-Sun powerhouse ETSU tomorrow at the Buccaneer’s home court.

Harris said he hopes the team will be prepared to take on the landmark organization.

“We’re going to go in, and we’re going to try and do our best to execute our shots and make sure we get the guys in the right mind frame, and then we’ll let it fall from there,” Harris said.

The match is set to begin on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
